When I started researching I was not particularly looking for anyone famous called GLASBY, I suppose fame can be defined in many different ways, nowadays it is more likely to mean a pop, film or sports star, but I have come across a few Glasby’s I would like to find out more about. I am always on the look-out for others of course, my “idea” of fame could be a report in a local newspaper for example of a competition prize winner. Some Glasby’s I have found so far are:-
HARRY GLASBY THE PIRATE
The first I heard about this Glasby was from someone in Sheffield, I eventually wrote to Sheffield Library not really believing there could have been a pirate by the name Glasby, but sure enough a positive response was received. Harry Glasby had sailed with Bartholomew Roberts and reference to the story can be found in Daniel Defoe’s “A General History Of the Pyrates”.
On the internet a brief mention of him can be found at: http://www.mariner.org/exhib_pirate
and http://www.sevenoceans.com/Pirates/PiratesbyName.htm
THREE ARTISTS BY THE NAMES GLASBY, GLASBEY, GLASSBY
In a book* of artists I found by chance on my local library’s shelves I found listed three men involved in stained glass, landscape painting and sculpture. I made several enquiries to various places like the Royal College of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum to name a couple and have managed to get together this information about them.
*The book was: “The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940 An Antique Collectors Club Research Project listing 41,000 Artists” Compiled by J Johnson and A Grevtzner.
WILLIAM GLASBY – Stained Glass Artist
Died 1941 at Horsham Sussex, had lived previously in London and exhibited at the Royal College of Art (1900-1923). His obituary states his work was sent to many places around the world and in particular the Peach Tree Church at Atlanta USA. He left a wife and two daughters.
On the internet I found a reference to a church in the Isle of Man which has two windows by him see http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/contrib/manx/parishes/mn/gwin. I also contacted the lady involved in the Isle of Man study and sent her copies of what I had on this artist for her research. Another web site of St Marks Church, Colney Heath states they have a Glasby window see http://www.roestock.demon.co.uk/stmarks/history
To see the Peach Tree church look at http://www.ci.atlanta.ga.us/DEPT/URBAN/peachtr.htm
A fourth reference has been found at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Arkansas to view see page www.quapaw.com/tour99/trinity.htm
If you know of anymore examples of his windows or more about the man I would be very interested in hearing from you.
EDWIN H GLASBY – Landscape Painter (Exhibited 1922-1925 address given as Lane End, Chapel Town, Sheffield)
I have not much on this gentleman though two of his works are listed as sold by auction from information I received from the National Art Library. Please let me know if you know of the whereabouts of any of his work or about the person himself.
In recent times I have had some correspondence over a painting by Edwin H Glasbey.
ROBERT GLASSBY – The Sculptor (Exhibited 1883-1896 address Chelsea, London)
Well, this one turned out to be VERY interesting, he worked under Sir J Edgar Boehm, Sculptor to Queen Victoria and from a piece out of a book I was sent by The Witt Institute, in London he hoped to be named after Boehms’s death as the successor to the title Sculptor Ordinaire to Queen Victoria, some of his works are part of the Royal Collection. I have been sent some photocopies of 2 examples of his work.
I have had correspondence with at least two people regarding Robert Glassby. This Robert originated from Mexborough in South Yorkshire. I have found this link to some information: sculpture.gla.ac.uk/view/person.php?id=msib4_1240827318
Beulah Glasby – I have also found details in newspapers of Beulah a woman who was a Missionary in China and died over there.
